Abstract

The aim of this paper is to assess part of Haji Seraia Shapshal’s contribution to Turkic studies, his article of 1939 on the suffix -γur(u) ~ -γyr(y) and his work on the Karaim-Russian-Polish Dictionary (1974). While the dictionary is well known among Turkologists and many researchers have used it in their studies, the aforementioned article has passed almost completely unnoticed. In this article Shapshal discusses the word formative -γur ~ -γyr suffix, known in Turkic studies, but also describes the completely unknown function of this suffix as an exponent of malevolence. Therefore, we may say that there are two different, but homophonous suffixes. Shapshal’s contributed the dictionary not only as a member of the editorial board, but also as an author who compiled many of the entries. Shapshal’s painstaking work on the entries for thedictionary is especially valuable, since he excerpted many words from Old Karaim texts and prepared most of the entries for the Crimean dialect.
