The The Correspondence of Professor Ananiasz Zajączkowski with His Wife Nadzieja, 1954–1970
Abstract
This article examines the scholarly value of the correspondence between the Polish Orientalist Professor Ananiasz Zajączkowski and his wife Nadzieja, written between 1954 and 1970. The corpus consists of 129 letters sent during Zajączkowski’s academic travels across Europe and Asia. Written in Polish, the letters provide detailed insights into the everyday life of a prominent scholar working in socialist Poland, while simultaneously maintaining an active international academic career. Despite political and institutional constraints, Zajączkowski continued his research abroad and participated in numerous international congresses. The correspondence combines personal reflections with emotional experiences, and scholarly networks of the period. As such, the collection constitutes a valuable source for the study of the history of Oriental studies, academic mobility during the Cold War, and the emotional dimensions of scholarly life in the 1950s and 1960s.
